Kendellhurst Academy is a private grade school founded by John Kendell and Paula Carrasco-Kendell. As parents we wanted a warm nurturing environment with attention to personal academic excellence for our children. After experiences with both a local prestigious private school and highly rated public school after our eldest child left our preschool division we once again thought seriously of home schooling our children. Instead after six years of great success with our two educationally based preschools and experience in the industry and having many many families ask us to open a private grade school we dove right in since we have the educational and business backgrounds Paula is also finishing her Doctorate of Education at OISE/U of T we decided to make a difference in the private grade school industry.
We offer our families a small boutique type school setting with attention to detail. From an organic menu and yoga lessons to tailored academic and signature programs weve created a superb setting for your child to flourish. Our motto of nurturing the students mind and spirit through creativity intelligence and personal academic excellence is central to everything we do. From curriculum development staff selection and school pedagogy this important thread is woven throughout Kendellhurst. We have visited and examined many of the private schools in the immediate Streetsville and Oakville areas in order to see conclusively that we are indeed offering a unique and outstanding program for choosy parents since we are choosy parents.
Our school is founded on a child-centered perspective of the world. We firmly believe that every individual child has specific needs to his/her world. Our classrooms school facility and programs are designed in an organized productive and nurturing manner in order to encourage each child’s intellectual emotional behavioral social and physical growth.
My son has been attending Kendellhust for the past 3 years. When I first attended the school to see if it was a fit for my family, Paula (the administrator) took the time to meet with me and answer all my questions. After interviewing 5 other schools (public and private) I knew KENDELLHURST would be the school to meet my sons academic and social needs. My son is a well rounded child who is challenged every day with the curriculum offered at KENDELLHURST. The teachers are so supportive and caring and have infact spent time from there own schedule to work with my son to enhance is reading after class. The creative aspect, music program (my son learned to play the guitar in grade 4 in less than 2 months), the martial arts offered, the clubs, French program are just a few of the assets affiliated with his school. They assure the children are exposed to school trips and offer an amazing ski trip which the children just adore. Now I must speak about the person care and support we have received from the school, the teachers and the office. We had a family crisis and I needed to find a camp program for my son as I was left with no child care. I called Paula and without a second thought adjusted her camp to accomdate my son. I am forever grateful. We look for to many more years at Kendellhust Academy!!!
My children have been at Kendellhurst since pre-K and are now in grades 3 & 5. The teachers and staff (and owners) here go above & beyond what other friends have told us is (or was) their experience at other schools (both in the private & public schools). The teaching methods are nurturing AND motivating (the smaller class sizes are advantageous to having this happen) and has given my children the confidence to learn at an advance level. My husband & I are grateful that our children go to school excited AND come home happy with constant stories of their football or soccer games at recess, the dishes they made in culinary arts, their spelling quiz marks or the fun they had in science class. I highly recommend you check out Kendellhurst Academy!
I have two children in KA. One is in JK and the other is in grade 4. They both have been in KA since they were toddlers (starting from KA’s Early Learning Center). Not only do I love this school but more importantly my children do. My kids wake up every morning excited and happy to go to school. This is largely due to the fact that KA provides a safe, friendly, encouraging, and nurturing environment for children to learn and develop.
As an educator myself, it was important to me that my children receive strong education in all of the various subjects. I have been extremely impressed. Both of my kids are achieving over and above what is expected of them in their grades. Beyond the core education that our children received, KA also offers a variety of activities including language (daily French program and weekly Mandarin club), art (wood working, lego robotics, culinary arts clubs etc), physical education (yoga, martial arts, hip hip, lunch time spring skate etc.), musical (recorder, guitar, piano, choir etc), and field (YPT, ROM, AGO, TSO, Mountsberg, Salmon release etc.) activities which really enrich the quality of learning. I have also been very proud of my kids’ onstage performing at each Christmas concert and end-of-year concert. These concerts give us an overview of the kinds of work our kids have been doing in performing arts and my kids have had performed instruments, dance, singing, drama or a combination of these in these concerts. In addition, KA also offers opportunities for kids to show their talents in specific areas through its annual talent show and spelling bee events.
Class sizes in KA are practical, allowing each child to grow and learn at his/her own pace. The teachers take pride in developing a special relationship with each child in the class and they are very aware of each child’s differing needs. This is evident by the fact that each time my kids move up a grade level, the teachers are able to tell our kids’ knowledge levels and learning styles within two weeks, and can tailor their efforts to our kids’ needs. The combination of relatively smaller class and dedicated, enthusiastic and nurturing teaching staff has enabled both of my kids to get the very best from their education.
From the school principal, the staff who work with her, to each of our children’s teachers, everyone in KA has always made the time to talk to us about any concerns or ideas we may have had, demonstrating that they share our priorities and concerns genuinely. We also appreciate KA’s excellent communication channels, including weekly school newsletters on the websites, daily class updates on kids’ agenda, and prompt responses to e-mails and phone messages. The academics and use of technology are also wonderful.
The last but not least is that the atmosphere in KA is filled with love and we can really see generosity, thoughtfulness, and friendship in the kids’ relations to each other. That is true between boys and girls, within each grade, and among grads as well.
We are proud to be part of KA family, and highly recommend this school.
Kendellhurst Academy Preschool is staffed with wonderful teachers and a rich curriculum. Our son is 3 and we are delighted with his progress over the last year.
All the caregivers – without exception – are nurturing and supportive providing a helping hand during the morning drop-off and a detailed account of our son’s day during the pick-up. This is quite helpful allowing us to work at home on improving any needed areas and reinforce what is already working well.
Academically, our son is proud to show us every week what he has learned; including his exercises on paper and educational songs. His first experience on a field trip last autumn went fantastic and we appreciate the detailed care from Kelly who does a great job running the campus in general.
It was through our close friends that we learned about this school and now my wife and I would highly recommend Kendellhurst. It is such a peace of mind to find a place that is consistently professional in its standards.
Firstly, THANK YOU! Thank you Kendellhurst for all your hard work and energy you put into your job of teaching children consistently on a daily basis. When we pick up or drop off our son at Kendellhurst everyday, we see from the hallways the students are always engaged in learning, working, smiling, and even laughing. It is easy to see that the students are happy to be at school. The staff and the administration are always welcoming, polite and professional. Immediately, one gets a sense of the school’s positive environment by watching the interaction between the teachers, the administrators and the students. Cleanliness and order are evident from the start of the school day until the end. This has been a refreshing experience for us as parents as our son transferred from the public system last year where we witnessed and experienced the exact opposite learning environment we see at Kendellhurst. Our son loves his school, his classmates and he loves to learn thanks to Kendellhurst’s magic recipe for success. Our son has excelled academically in all subject areas and he can’t stop talking about the extra- curricular clubs and programs offered at Kendellhurst. Again Thank you Kendellhurst for making our entire family happy and restoring our faith in the educational system.
I wanted to thank the staff and teachers, Paula, Roni and John for the wonderful environment they have provided to my daughter. My daughter is currently attending grade 5 at the Kendellhurst Academy. She has been part of the Kendellhurst community (and it certainly is a community not only for students but for parents as well) since she was 22 months old. Through this time and with the help of the school’s staff, administrators and teachers Chloe has grown up to be a well rounded and happy girl who loves to learn. The school is absolutely outstanding. The curriculum is well above the standard we hear other parents at other schools talk about. The kids learn not only the academic requirements but also learn the importance of community and diversity. Everyone from the teachers to the vice-principle and the owners of the school always strive for continual growth and welcome suggestions from parents. The kids get exposed to variety of activities including volunteering, sponsoring children in less fortunate countries, field trips including the Art Gallery, Salmon Release, tree planting, skiing and skating. ‘m happy to say that my daughter loves going to school everyday even when she is sick it takes a while to convince her to stay at home as she does not want to miss anything that might be happening at the school We are very proud to tell all our friends and family about the school..wish it would go all the way upto grade 12! Thank you!
Kendellhurst is terrific! Five years ago my daughter transitioned from an enriching and caring day-care system into a private school that all but destroyed her confidence and her enthusiasm for learning. She stopped talking. After sending a very emotional email to Paula at Kendellhurst, I got a response back within one hour and I have never looked back. Now my second daughter is in the JK programme and my only regret is that Kendellhurst doesn’t go past grade 8!! The outcome is as I had hoped – happy kids that do amazing things, and are happy to share the amazing things they do.
The extraordinary teachers are passionate about individual care for each child. Small class-sizes and above-and-beyond attention take these kids to another level. The school encourages open teacher-parent dialogue (not just the one-phone-call-a-month that is typical of so many private schools) and I get constant face-to-face feedback on my children’s progress. The curriculum is marvelous, especially the weaving of art and culture into all levels of learning. The drive towards community-spirit is inculcated into every aspect of the children’s day-to-day activities – the school is situated in the middle of a village where the kids witness and participate in community living everyday. John’s affiliation with conservation activities has driven a culture of caring for and enjoying the environment – the Salmon Release programme is one, and the annual ski-trip is another. Roni is the hub of the school – she has an amazing ability to manage the day-to-day operations with precision but also with empathy at the core of her decision-making; we are lucky! My favourite element of the school is their virtues programme – the daily reminders of what it means to be a contributing and kind global citizen. The kids are well-rounded from academics, athletics, and music to woodworking, kitchen skills, and community citizenship. The day-to-day interactions with all the staff are very special, and have made this little gem of a school easily the best kept secret.
As both a parent and a teacher, I am very proud to say that we have been a part of the Kendellhurst Academy family since 2008. My children are now 11 years and two years of age. Thinking back to my oldest son’s first day at Kendellhurst, I will never forget picking him up from school and for the entire drive home all I heard was the word “extinct”. He was so determined to share with me what he had learned that day about extinction that he persevered with the word until I finally understood him. He was only three years old. Little did I know that he would be playing the recorder by the age of four and setting up his own Power Point presentation for a class project by the age of seven! Clearly, a spark for learning had been lit!
Taught by exceptional and nurturing teachers, Kendellhurst’s dynamic learning programs and supportive atmosphere allow students to investigate and explore their inner curiosities and build upon these inquiries. As a result of the social responsibility and character building programs offered at this school, there is no doubt that Kendellhurst graduates will go forth into the world as active, responsible, and critical thinking stewards of the earth. Only at Kendellhurst, through their unique Salmon Release Program, will your child get to experience first hand the impact their choices have on wildlife and in turn us. The lessons are valuable beyond measure! In addition to the many carefully thought out field trips, the high quality school concerts in which all areas of the Arts are reflected, and the additional Physical Education programs such as Yoga, Martial Arts, and Hip Hop, the After-School Clubs are phenomenal as well! From Wood Working, Lego Robotics, Culinary Arts and Mandarin, the choices and experiences are endless!
If your wish is to have your child flourish both personally and academically, it is time to ignite that spark by enrolling them at Kendellhurst Academy! See you there!
I have only great things to say about Kendellhurst. We switched our son to this school 5 years ago as he was not succeeding at the school he had been at. After evaluating several options, we knew KA was the school for us. He’s been there ever since. KA not only helped my son catch up where he was lagging, but repaired the negative association he had developed about school and his own academic potential. The administration quickly understood the type of support he required and worked closely with us to ensure he succeeded. KA has a strong culture of believing in each child’s potential and helping them to capitalize on their strengths, while at the same time proving a broad range of fantastic experiences and stretching them academically. My son loves that he gets to do wood-working club, karate, fine art, unique outings like the salmon release and so on. With it being a small school, there’s a strong sense of inclusion and belonging and a family-like atmosphere. I am grateful year after year that we found Kendellhurst!
